The World Of Wine

According to locals, Georgia is the cradle of wine. Traces of wine-making tradition discovered in this area date back to 6000 years ago.

Despite this, Georgia still is not on the itinerary list of many wine-lovers. Mass production of wine in the Soviet times and unstable situation after fell of USSR are some of the main reason. But during last decade, wine-making is being redefined in Georgia. Quality over quantity once again.

Georgia has over 500 wine species and unique wine-making tradition. Unlike in Europe, USA or South America wine regions, wine is being made in clay vessels called kvevri, that are buried underground during the fermentation process and later, when the wine is stored.

Medieval Monasteries

Georgia adopted Christianity as the state religion as the second country in the world (first being Armenia) in the 4th century.  Thus, the monuments of sacral architecture here are really deep of history and meaning.

In Georgia, and Kakheti region particularly, history of wine is intertwined with the history of the church. You will find patterns of grape and wine leafs on facades of many churches here. Monks in some of the monasteries still produce wine, some of them reaching real mastery – like in Alaverdi.
